Update: June 2020
Harvesting
2019-20 has seen harvesting operations in the following forests:
· Beattie & Duthie Forests (Hamilton Burn)
· McPherson Forest (Lillburn Valley, Western Southland
· Overton Forest (Hokonui Hills, Central Southland)
· Walker Forest (Waimahaka, Eastern Southland)
· Blair, Goldingham & Nicol & Voice Forests (Catlins, Eastern Southland)
· Marshall Forest (Longwoods, Western Southland)
. Taylor Forest (Mossburn, Northern Southland)
. Groveburn Forest (Western Southland)
Roads continue to be extended in Blair, Turner, Walker, Cave, Lyder & Marshall Forests as harvesting progresses.
Establishment
950 hectares of cutover was re-planted and fertilised during the winter season across several different forests.
SPFL is planning to re-establish a further 1000 ha of cutover in the 2020 season with land preparations already underway.
Forest Health and Biodiversity
SPFL in conjunction with the Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF) and Scion continue to fund and support work around introducing the biocontrol agent Eadya paropsidis, a parastic wasp for the control against the defoliating pest Paropsis charybdis or Eucalyptus Tortoise Beetle. Results to date have looked very promising with final testing against the potential of the wasp to attack non-targeted native and beneficial insects completed.
Nesting falcon pairs have been ever-present this year in the cutover & newly planted area. The falcons take refuge and build their nests in the windrows that SPFL created prior to establishment. These provide a great habitat for this nationally endangered species.
Forest Access by Public
Numerous people were granted access permits for SPFL forests this year. This included access for hunting, bee keeping and other recreational activities.
PEFC Certification
SWEL has maintained PEFC certification showing well managed forests approved under the certification system based on the New Zealand standard for sustainable forest management (NZS as 4708:2014) making SPFL forests dual certified with FSC and PEFC certification.
