FSC®
SPFL is committed to the principles of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) forest management certification.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is an internationally recognised and accepted standard in sustainable forest management. The FSC promote the use of forests and forest products in such a way that is socially, environmentally and financially sustainable. This is accomplished through assessment against a set of performance standards that are based on FSC's ten Principles and Criteria of responsible forest management.
FSC certification covers all wood related industry from the growth of raw material in the forest (forest management certification), through the processing sectors (chain of custody (COC) certification), to the marketing and labelling of consumer products (also covered by COC certification). Consumers can be assured that by purchasing a wood or wood based product bearing the FSC name or trademark, that they are purchasing an item that has been produced in a responsible, sustainable manner.
SPFL achieved FSC® certification in February 2004 (RA-FM/COC-001130) and was granted FSC® Licence Code: FSC-C008418 following a detailed audit of their operations. SPFL has also attained FSC® Chain of Custody certification for uncertified controlled material (RA-COC-006893/RA-CW-006893) and was granted FSC® Licence Code: FSC-C120952. These achievements cemented SPFL's commitment to uphold the guiding principles and criteria of the FSC®. As a dynamic forestry company, SPFL's approach to exploring better alternatives has integrated well with the FSC®'s philosophy of continual improvement. This improvement is measured by means of annual audits. (Note: In 2019, RA in Certificate Codes was changed to NC)
In addition to continually improving our performance with our plantation resource, SPFL is also committed to improving the quality and long-term viability of the areas of indigenous vegetation that make up over 20% of the area of our estate. This has been facilitated through the development of individual management plans and monitoring programmes to ensure that the threats to these areas are mitigated or, where possible, eliminated. As a socially responsible forest owner, SPFL has put in place processes for ensuring that the wellbeing of our stakeholders and their communities are a major consideration in the planning and implementation of all our forestry operations. If you have any questions regarding any of SPFL's forests or operations, we will be very happy to discuss any issues with you.
